The preliminary autopsy report in the death of a Smith County man who died after being shot in the head at a local gun range indicates the death was accidental.

Smith County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Gary Alfred said in a phone interview Thursday that the preliminary report from the Southwest Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas indicated 62-year-old Gary Dooley died of an accidental gunshot to the head.

Alfred ordered the autopsy after Dooley was found at the 31 West Shooting Range at 16934 Texas Highway 31 West on Saturday evening.

Smith County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call about 4:45 p.m. Saturday, from the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office stating that they had received a 911 call regarding a man accidentally shooting himself at the gun range.

The man, identified as Dooley by the sheriff’s department, died at the scene.

A friend of Dooley described the man as a gun enthusiast who was proficient in gun knowledge even restoring old Mosin rifles and then selling them.

Alfred did not know when the complete autopsy, which includes toxicology and other tests, would be complete, but he reiterated the preliminary reports’ findings on the manner of death being accidental.
